September 24, 2024 will mark 100 years since the allumettières (matchstick women) started their second labour conflict with E.B. Eddy. This group of fearless and hardworking women employed in the E.B. Eddy Match Factory, on the site where Zibi is now growing, played a crucial role in shaping the region’s economic and social fabric during the early 20th century.
As the Ville de Gatineau commemorates this important milestone with the unveiling of a new monument at Place des Contremaîtresses at Zibi, let us take a moment to reflect on the contributions of these incredible women to the labour movement in Canada.
Who were *Les Allumettières*?
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the matchstick industry in Hull was booming, with the E.B. Eddy Company leading the charge. Hundreds of women, many of whom were the main breadwinners for their families, worked long, grueling hours producing matchsticks in unsafe conditions. They often faced exposure to hazardous chemicals like phosphorus, which led to “phossy jaw,” a painful and debilitating disease. Despite these risks, these women stood tall, demanding better wages and working conditions—laying the foundation for women’s labour movements in Canada.
The term *Allumettières* has since become synonymous with strength, resilience, and the fight for workers’ rights. As we reach the centennial of their story, this anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of their contributions and a celebration of their enduring spirit.
Zibi pays tribute to the allumettières’ and region’s history
Zibi is and has always been deeply committed to preserving the region’s rich history, through commemorative efforts, the reuse and restoration of materials, and the preservation of historic buildings.
This summer, Zibi has been honoured to partner with the Ville de Gatineau to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Les Allumettières by hosting a play reenacting their struggles, holding guided tours of the remaining E.B. Eddy buildings, and now, unveiling a new commemorative installation at Place des Contremaîtresses on rue Jos-Montferrand.
Join us in celebrating 100 years of legacy, community, and progress. For more information about the centennial events, visit Les allumettières, 100 ans après, and please make sure to visit Place des Contremaîtresses to view the new commemorative installation.
